Mark Skinner

Mark studied Business Economics with Computing at the University of Surrey and had been lucky enough to have experienced summer placements in the insurance industry as well as a year in industry as part of his degree.

"The first thing that appealed to me about JLT was how the company is structured. Each class of business is divided into specific areas where the employees expertise are utilised. I am currently a Trainee Account Handler working my way through four rotational placements in the Marine division. Since joining, the most exciting aspect of my role has been ensuring cover is in place for our clients who transit the Gulf of Aden where there is currently an increased threat of piracy.

JLT really values graduates and this is shown by the responsibility given to us from a very early stage. All the graduates follow a structured programme and undertake the CII qualification which gives you a wider knowledge of the insurance industry. I am looking forward to completing my exams and the Development programme and as my knowledge of Marine develops, progressing within JLT.

My advice to anyone who is looking to break into the insurance industry is to develop your knowledge on the insurance market as a whole. This will not only benefit yourself in interviews but provides the starting blocks from which to expand your knowledge throughout the scheme. Having excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential when working in the market whether as a broker (placing the business) or an account handler (dealing with clients).
